Certified Medical Coding Professional​

Requirements: 

• Active MCHC Membership is required to register for certification exam and must be maintained annually.

• Eligible candidates must meet one of the following requirements: ​

  • Education: complete at least 100 hours of online or classroom training for medical auditing and/or compliance

  • Experience: Minimum of two (2) years related auditing / compliance experience

  • Credential: Hold an active MCHC credential OR a credential from other certifying organization plus one (1) year of compliance and/or auditing experience.

• Score 80% or higher overall between sections one and two.  A section score must be 70% or higher.​

  • Scoring below 70% on a single section, but maintaining 80% overall requires the failing section to be successfully completed with 70% or higher to obtain certification. ​

• Complete 14 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) annually surrounding medical coding. ​

CHCP Certification Examination Details:

CMCP is a 4.5 hour timed exam.  Section 1 is 3 hours and Section 2 is 1.5 hours.

Section 1: 100 Multiple Choice Questions

25 ICD-10-CM Coding & Guidelines, 50 CPT and/or ICD-10-CM, 2 Medical Terminology, 2 Anatomy, 8 HCPCS Level II, 4 Medical Record Documentation, 9 Modifiers for CPT and HCPCS

Section 2: Simulated Chart Coding

Requires direct input (also referred to as hard coding) of evaluation and management services, surgeries, and other ancillary services.  Some cases may require use of all three coding manuals and inquiries to provider.
